The thistle and cedar of Lebanon

Recently I read a story and that bothered me a little. Then the LORD reminded me of a parable about the thistle and the cedar of Lebanon.

The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar in Lebanon, saying, “Give your daughter to my son for a wife.” And a beast of the field in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle down. – 2 Chronicles 25:18 (MKJV)

1 Peter 5:8-9“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.”

You are my God – through Jesus Christ

In the midst of the wilderness, when we call unto our LORD, saying, “O God, You are my God” (Psalm 63:1), what is the assurance we have that the Lord will honor our faith, accept our adoption and fulfill His promises? There is one Assurance we have, just one Assurance:

Jesus Christ

That is the only Assurance we have and the only Assurance we need.

  • We come to God our Father through Jesus Christ, our Savior and the Son of God. If we come to God through His Son Jesus Christ, be assured that we will never be forsaken. Yes, dear friend, when we come to God through Jesus Christ, we will be heard always.

Jesus-only-way

  • When we call unto LORD our God with faith, don’t forget even for a second, that our faith begins and ends with Jesus Christ. We cannot call God our Father as our God, unless we have our faith strongly rooted in our Savior Jesus Christ. Yes, Jesus Christ is the Author and prefecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). And, dear friend, our Father in Heaven honors such a faith – a faith based on His Son, a faith started by His Son and made perfect by His Son. That is the blessed assurance we have when we call our God with faith.

hebrews-12-2

  • When we call unto our God for adoption, we have one faith, faith through Jesus Christ, that God our Father will accept as His own children. Yes, dear friend, we are all children of God through our faith in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:26). Never ever forget that. Your faith in our Savior Jesus Christ has made us the children of God, and we call unto Him, saying, “O God, You are my God”, imagine how delighted He would be that His children are calling and honoring Him. Yes, dear friend, the LORD is delighted in you and He will show His delight in you soon. That is the assurance we have.

  • When we call the LORD our God for our promises, we asked through our LORD Jesus Christ. And no matter what promises the LORD has given you, we have this assurance.

For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through Him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God. – 2 Corinthians 1:20 (NIV)

Yes, dear friend, all the promises that the LORD God has given us are “YES” in our LORD Jesus Christ. And for all the promises, our Savior has said “AMEN”. And when we approach God our Father through His Son and our Savior Jesus Christ, all the promises will be “Yes” and “Amen” to us.

Yes and Amen

So, dear friend, let us call unto our LORD, saying, “O God, You are my God” (Psalm 63:1) through our Savior Jesus Christ – through the Name above all names. Amen.

You are my God – the promises

Dear friend, you may have lost everything in your life. Probably when you look up at your future, it looks like a barren land. Everywhere you turn, there is only wilderness before you. There is no hope left. And are you left wondering what to do?

David was in the same situation in his life. He had lost everything. All his wealth, fame and courage meant nothing as he was wandering in the wilderness. Realizing that there is no hope on all the directions, he looked up – towards the LORD our God and said,

“O God, You are my God.” – Psalm 63:1

Dear friend, when you look up towards our God and with faith when you say, “O God, You are my God”, it pleases our Lord so much. And you are adopting Him as your God, your Savior. And when you call unto Him, dear friend, our God comes to you. And with Him, comes His precious promises.

Dear friend, if you have called out to our LORD Jesus Christ in faith and has adopted Him as your own God, then all His promises come with Him and those promises will be fulfilled.

A day came later in the life of David. One day when he came to his residence at Ziklag, he saw that the Amalekites had plundered everything that belonged to him and he was left alone. Are you in such a situation? Has the plunderer taken everything away from you? Your happiness? Your peace? Your family? Your future? Are you pushed to your limits, that all you want to do is to just cry your heart out?

Dear friend, David, the great warrior, a man of courage, did that. The Bible tells that he and his warriors lifted up their voices and wept aloud till they had no energy left (1 Samuel 30:4). So, dear friend, if you want to cry aloud because of your circumstances, go ahead. Cry your heart to our LORD. But, don’t stop there. Crying is not your end. Losing everything is not God’s plan for you.

During his time in wilderness, David had adopted the Almighty God as his own God. And during one of the worst moments in his life, David found strength in the LORD his God.

But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God. – 1 Samuel 30:6 (NIV)

strengthen20yourself20in20the20lord_012Note how the Bible talks about the LORD his God. Yes, dear friend, if you are in such a situation, strengthen yourself today, now, at this very moment in the LORD your God. When you call Him “My God”, the LORD prides that you are His own child. It pleases Him so much and He comes to you, to strengthen you with His promise.

The same promise that the LORD his God gave David that day – our LORD is giving you, whoever you are, but if you lift your eyes up to Him, and call unto Him saying, “O God, you are my God”, the LORD is giving you a promise and HE will do it for you. And the promise is:

“Without fail, you shall recover everything that you lost.” – 1 Samuel 30:8

You are my God – Adoption

When things go wrong, when you feel like there is no one on your side, dear friend, take heart. Lord Jesus Christ is there for you. All you need to do is to come to Him. You may say, “But I am a Christian already. So, should I come to Him?” And the answer is “YES”.

Jesus Christ is not only our God, He is also our everything. When we seek Him everyday, it does not matter what is waiting for us… it could be a fiery furnace, a lion’s den, an enemy’s plan to wipe you out… we will never feel that Jesus has forsaken us. Because He has promised us:

“I will never turn away the one who comes to Me.” – John 6:37 (ISV)

Yes, dear friend, that’s what David did. During one of the toughest times in his life, when he lost everything and was left in a wilderness, he adopted the Eternal God as his own God and said, “O God, You are my God.” – Psalm 63:1

The LORD did not turn him away. David was not forgotten. Our God did not forsake David. Instead, the LORD provided for David in the wilderness, used those times of trial to make David a warrior par excellence and most importantly, taught David that the loving kindness of our LORD is much more valuable than his own life.

Dear friend, does not matter how hard your situation is, come to our LORD Jesus Christ. Say to Him, “O God, You are my God.” And the LORD who saved David from the wilderness and made him in to a great king is able to do great things for you too. Amen.

You are my God – Faith

When David said, “O God, You are my God”, he was expressing at least three things in his confession. And, dear friend, I sincerely hope that you are also expressing those three things when you confess the same.

The first thing David expresses is his faith. Yes, things are going wrong. Every day, matters go from bad to worse. Slowly, it looks, as if your hope is being snuffed out. It looks like the LORD has forgotten you. No matter how much you pray, you can not feel the presence of God. But, dear friend, have faith.

faith-hebrews-11-v-1-mvm (1)

You may not be able to ‘feel’ the presence of God; you may not ‘see’ the guidance of the LORD in your present situation; you may not ‘sense’ the love of Jesus Christ right now. But have faith, dear friend. With faith, confess along with David:

O God, You are my God.

And when you put your faith in our LORD and confess with your mouth, you shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end (Isaiah 45:17). For the LORD God will help you (Isaiah 50:7). So, with renewed faith, let us say in unison with David and every Christian:

O God, You are my God. Amen.

You are my God

In the wilderness of Judah, when he had nothing to support him, David sang Psalm 63. And, in that time of extreme desperation, the very first line he had to utter is:

O God, You are my God. – Psalm 63:1 (MKJV)

Dear friend, today, in this time of desperation, what words are coming out of your mouth? There is no God. Probably there is a God, but He is not a loving God. He is God who enjoys hurting us. He is a despotic ruler, a martinet who has a magnifying glass to magnify the small mistakes we do in our life. Oh, God has forgotten me. He has left me. He has forsaken me. Oh, the devil has more power than God. These are some of the words I have heard from good Christians during their time in wilderness.

David was the son-in-law of the king. He was the general of the army. He was anointed by the LORD to be the next king. But one day, he was pursued by his own father-in-law. He had to flee in such a hurry, that the general did not even have time to take his sword with him. And in the wilderness, with no water and food, we would have probably even questioned the anointing he had received. But not David. With more conviction, he says, “O God, You are my God.”

Today, probably you are in the same situation. You are being persecuted by the same people you have helped. Your own family does not understand your suffering. Dear friend, God has called you for greater things, but here you are, you have lost even what you had before… and wondering if that calling you received was true… that promise God gave you, is that for real… will the LORD forsake you, will you be forgotten as a failure.

My friend, there are no words to comfort you for what you are undergoing. But, all I can say is, look up to the Heavens and tell our LORD just what David said in the same situation:

O God, You are my God.

May the LORD of David be with you today and comfort you with His grace. Amen.
