Diligent in your work

Do you see a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before unknown men. – Proverbs 22:29 (MKJV)

The Hebrew word, ‘mahiyr’ is used here for ‘diligent’, which literally means ‘ready’ and is derived from another Hebrew word, ‘mahar’, which means ‘to hasten’, ‘to be swift’ and ‘to do quickly or swiftly’.

When someone does their work diligently, meeting the deadlines promptly and putting their heart into it, they may have an obscure start, but they will not remain there for long. They will stand before kings, because that will be the place of those who do their work diligently.

Joseph was his father’s favorite son. When all his other brothers were working, his father kept him from work. Joseph had great dreams, literally, about his future. Then one day, everything went wrong. He was sold as a slave by his own blood and flesh, and from the great comfortable life he had, he had to work as a slave.

Did Joseph complain about his work? Did he shirk his responsibility? The answer would be a resounding NO. Of course, the Bible does not say it plainly, but when we look at the verses that talk about his work, every single time, there is an extra note in Genesis, Chapter 39.

It does not matter whether Joseph was a slave in an official’s house or a prisoner, the LORD was with him and gave him success in everything he did. I don’t think our God would be with someone who complained about his work all the time and shirked his responsibilities.

Though his beginning had nothing to talk about, Joseph kept doing his work diligently. So, the LORD was with him and gave him success in everything he did. And, one day, Joseph stood before the king of Egypt and was honored.

How about you, my dear friend? Are you disappointed with your job? You had such great dreams about how your future was going to be, but you got stuck with this menial job and you are not at all happy. You have realized that this is it, and you are just going through the motions, just like everybody else.

But, dear friend, never forget that dream that the LORD God gave you. Your circumstances are not there to fail you. No, these are the furnaces meant to test your true worth. These are the days that will show you and show others what you are made up of.

Do you still believe in those dreams? Do you believe that the LORD does have great plans for you? Then, whatever you do, do diligently. And very soon, you will be standing before kings. And one day, you will be standing, head held high, before the King of kings. May the LORD of Joseph be with us and give us success in every work we do diligently. Amen.
