Every year, something happens to our church around Easter. Not once have I heard a sermon on the Resurrection of our Lord on Easter Sunday. It is always the same verse, 1 Corinthians 15:43, “It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power.” And the sermon will be about whether we will get resurrected or not when Jesus comes. Always the same words, same sermon and always about how most of the church members will not be raised in glory. Never about Jesus and His resurrection.
And this year, when the same sermon was repeated, the church members got disinterested as they knew the sermon almost verbatim. And it was above 105-deg Fahrenheit and everyone was sweating. So, soon they stopped paying attention to the sermon and that provoked the church pastor. So from then on, every Sunday, the sermons are about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and, how most of us will not be going to heaven with Jesus and will be thrown in the lake of fire and brimstone. And all these sermons are when the temperature was so hot and already it was burning like hell.
Now, is it wrong to talk about the Second Coming of Jesus? Of course, not. And we must talk about that. But there is a way to talk about the Second Coming of our Lord.
Recently I attended a wedding with my wife and it became a big thing in our family. For one, I generally do not attend many family gatherings. Second, I have been sick for a while, I get tired soon even if 2-3 people talk to me for more than 30 minutes. And I have not travelled out of our hometown for last 3 years… almost feels like I am in house arrest. The only time I went out was last year, in an ambulance, but I guess that does not count.
As soon as my nieces found out that we are attending the wedding, they called their friends to inform that their aunt and uncle are coming to attend a family wedding and that their friends must attend the wedding so that they can meet us. None of these friends knew the bride or the groom. Just the bride is related to us, yet all these friends showed up. However, they did not come for the wedding per se, but to meet my wife and me. And they were so happy to meet us and they talked about how much they have heard about us from our nieces and how they have been planning to meet us for a while and all that.
Now, these kids did not know me or my wife personally. But they wanted to meet us. Why? Because our nieces have said good things about us. So, they were excited to see us. It made me think. We do not talk enough about Jesus Christ and His goodness. We do not talk about the Supreme Sacrifice at Calvary. We do not talk about the love of our Everlasting Father and how much love He has for us, that He sacrificed His Son for us. The more we talk about the grace and love of our Lord, the kindness and compassion He has for us… the more we talk about Him, the more will the Christians look forward to meet our Saviour. The more we show the love Jesus showed for us at Calvary, the more they will look forward to see the Lord with their own eyes.
The Bible does says that “the sweetness of the lips increases learning.” (Proverbs 16:21) Let our lips be filled with the sweet things of our Lord and may it help in the learning of all believers.
